There are many different types and styles of acrylic painting from painterly style with obvious brush strokes to impasto with thick, heavy layers of paint and many more.

For example, student grade paints will take more layers than artist quality, and yellows will take more layers than a dark blue.

Hi Nessa, the gesso will help to give you a better surface to paint onto, and you can use a sealer like GAC100 from Golden paints which can protect the surface from Support Induced Discoloration (S.I.D.).

Ron. Some of the pre-primed gesso boards I find very hard and repel watery washes, however, if youre painting with thicker paint they can work well.

Then the subsequent layers, which are slightly thicker (less diluted) will absorb and grab nicely into the layer below. Use specific blending techniques. To do this create a test piece with a similar surface that you want to test, then apply a few different colors both at full strength and then at 2:1, 1:1, 1:2, and 1:3 ratios of paint to water.

It is best to get a few different types of paper cartidge, watercolour etc and have a play until you find the paper that is the right balance between thickness and absorbancy for the style of paint application youre after.

Most of the painting books I recommend are for Oil painting, I originally started the blog to give advice on a more classical approach to Acrylic painting. A stiff, hog hair bristle brush more suited to oil painting will cause numerous streaks in your paint. Or you want objects within that painting to look smooth.

You need to constantly wipe off the excess paint from your brush on a cloth or the technique wont work. Fluid acrylics contain the same amount of pigment as heavy body paint so your color depth wont be compromised.

If you want a smooth finish it is an advantage to have a longer drying time as this gives you more time to work. If not, then you have very good adhesion and no reason to believe that adhesion will lessen over time. For price, MDF is good and gives a nice smooth surface.

If you want to paint really thinly with Acrylics, its best to use an Acrylic that has already been diluted in the paint manufacturing process. There can also be a strong sharp-edged highlight.
