At first I was a bit worried that the fence wouldn't set square to the table (therefore square to the chisel bit), because the clampdown screws have some play when they're not clamped down. My fix (my wife's brilliant suggestion) was to put a piece of masking tape on the chisel bit to mark the desired depth (in addition to setting the stop), and watch to make sure I'm not exceeding the tape line with each cut. The new POWERMATIC 701 Benchtop Mortiser has a quick-action cam lock that will quickly lock the fence into position with one 90 movement. Most of the adjustment screws come with spring loaded adjustments so the orientation of the lever can be moved around, which is also nice.
