He used to tell everybody he was a ninja; I think he still maintains he was a ninja and took his training from this guy named Tanaka. But Norris was the one, I think, who they declared as the winner. It's the amazing tale of Frank Dux, a Caucasian martial artist who fought in (and won) a ruthless secret tournament that's held only once every five years. It's a sprawling ecosystem. So he re-cut the fights, Michael restructured the movie and when we saw the next cut (which was quite a while later), the movie really worked. I said, "But I can see your view from here and how the world could look bleak." But back then it sounded really cool.Blake Harris: Well you started that clich!Sheldon Lettich: [laughter] Back then, to say "based on a true story" was something that intrigued, and I think it particularly intrigued Menahem Golan. He knew enough buzzwords to make me think he's the real deal, he's probably been over there. Anyways, they didn't pay me for doing my work on The Corsican Brothers and Delta Force 2. There had been a few other plays dealing with the military and Vietnam at the time, but they weren't written by those who had actually been there. California, Oregon and Washington. Like, for example, about your teacher?Frank Dux: They try to make it sound like I made up my instructor. For me, martial arts is just a release. But here's a photo from the screening, so I guess at least one person wanted to have their photo taken with me. So Leon and I go and pitch this to Menahem. I don't think Stallone has ever been given his due by movie critics. And he says, "What?" Released in theaters 35 years ago, on Feb. 26, 1988, Bloodsport starred Van Damme as Frank Dux, a U.S. Army soldier who leaves the military to enter a fight-to-the-death martial arts tournament in . He owes you two more movies! They did sequels and I've never gotten paid for them when I was supposed to. Especially when you believe that person is your friend.Frank Dux: Exactly. That's the thing. Like, very famously, he turned down Demolition Man. So I suggested a version where Rambo tells Trautman, "Sorry, Colonel, I fought my war. That was the real Sheldon Lettich. 20th Century Fox was high on Only the Strong and we all kind of expected that movie to do better than it did. He was actually going to come to that Bloodsport screening in North Hollywood [referenced in our conversation with Frank Dux]. It was awarded the Drama-Logue Critics' Award for Direction and the Los Angeles Drama Critics' Award for Ensemble Performance. For the first time in about 14 years. It chronicles his training by a Japanese master warrior named Tiger [Tanaka]Shoto Tanemura, a Japanese who is one of a select group of recognized Ninja masters in the world, said in an interview in Los Angeles last week that he had never heard of Dux or Tanaka. I should mention that within hours of the piece begin published, we received several unsolicited e-mails from people who had been there and had a significantly different memory of the screening.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] I'll let you readers draw their own conclusions. We did not use CGI, that was only just starting to become popular, so we had to do everything optically. ", How Did This Get Made:A Conversation With Sheldon Lettich, Screenwriter Of Bloodsport, How Did This Get Made: A Conversation with Frank Dux, the Real-Life Inspiration for Bloodsport. But if we can cut it down, I think we can sell this novel. They were going to do a movie called Night of the Leopard but there were some problems with getting the script so now they needed a new one. So it was lot of college hijinks, trying to get girls and all that stuff. But they called me from Hong KongFrank and Jean-Claudelamenting the fact that "Mark DiSalle was messing up the script." It took me years to understand the producer's point, but I do now. I met this guy Sheldon Lettich, who had done a play called Tracers and we became friends. Surprised? Let's meet face to face. And they've never wavered from that.Blake Harris: The kick?Sheldon Lettich: Yeah. And then there was the famous meeting between Jean-Claude and Menahem on La Cienega Boulevard. Absolutely. The ninja school if you want to call it that. "Blake Harris: That's great. Please note as always our subject'sopinions, recollections and claims are his own, and do not reflect the views of the author or this publication. That's bullshit, that's total bullshit.Blake Harris: What about those claims regarding your covert military background? The concept of gladiatorial games has its roots in the Etruscans, the predecessors of the Romans. Give me a shot with him." "Frank Dux: Yeah. You had mentioned that you and Sheldon reshaped that original script. Nobody clapped or wanted to have their picture taken with you. We may receive a commission on purchases made from links. Told that the tournament was a secret, he said: "We would know. KUMITE! And he was just a different person. Tiger Tanaka, right? I also remember seeing something on Mayberry R.F.D. Later on, Lee took Grant and showed him that one of his legs was shorter than the other. He had a karate background. And he agreed to that. But the real contest was just punches to the chest, and Moore beat Lee like 4-2. It's a way for me to just flow. But they still run it. And then Troutman gets captured by the Russians and Rambo's feeling guilt because he let his buddy down. It's incredible." And it became real clear and finallyI said show me the proof that I represented myself as a war hero, as a Medal of Honor hero? So on Lionheart, I went up where [Jean-Claude] was standing on the ledge of the building, doing what I had done that he was afraid to do in Hong Kong. He remembered that there were different shots. It can't happen.". Following his appearances in the two preceding sequels, Daniel Bernhardt returns in the new role of Agent John Keller, who goes into prison . And the receipt was dated 1982, okay? He says, "I love you. By their own photographer. So the play was groundbreaking in some ways. So flash forward ten years and I still had this notion of doing a film about the classic era of French Foreign Legion movie. Are you kidding me? That's not even my name. It's not something that I'm interested in, but good luck." Oh yeah! Jean-Claude had a three picture deal with Menahem at Cannon and Leon was very impressed with Jean-Claude; we all thought this was a match made in heaven. It was called Firebase and was basically Zulu in Vietnam; about a small disparate group forced together on a Firebase that gets attacked by an overwhelming number of North Vietnamese. "Tagline:The True Story of an American Ninja. There's not a Tanaka in Japanese history of the ninja families? Sometimes we get answers to questions like these, and other times we do not. Not what's typically expected, which was: Jean-Claude's going to find these motherf***ers and beat the s*** out of them. Double Impact was financed, mostly, through pre-sales and, as it was structured, each of those companies also own a piece of the movie. People don't really know that about Lee, but he had one leg shorter than the other. You want to fight, let's fight?" Because I think he's got a Walter Mitty syndrome. The character is initially depicted as a vengeful veteran of the Vietnam War, angry at the people of Metropolis for their "senseless . Except the version that Stallone had in mind was for a present day French Foreign Legion movie about two American buddies who enlist. Look, I take people at face value because I'm not a bulls***ter. He kept saying, "Jean-Claude is poison!" I was going to say something like, "By the way, there's actually someone here who worked on the movie and he can maybe answer some of your questions" and he was going to come out and everyone would have went f***ing crazy. He was very stiff. So Frank and I go to a theater and we were both blown away by Jean-Claude. Two, actually. During my intelligence career, I have met with and been introduced to many covert operatives, whose existence has often been officially denied by the government agencies that these parties have been associated with. Dux aped the premise behind Enter the Dragon, then claimed it as true. And so he told Menahem, "Sell it to me and I'll release it theatrically." Blake Harris: The Black Belt article got a lot of attention and certainly must have piqued the interest of some folks in Hollywood. I turned over the programs from the fights that we had in those days. And the story there, which I've told many times, came from Frank telling me about his exploits. We pitched it to them and they were kind of interested, but at the end of the day they decided not to do it. She loved it. And he knows it. I didn't see it coming. I mean, the guy announced his malice. That was invented, right then and there. In honor of How Did This Get Made?'s #Bloodsport episode, we made this #supercut of Jean-Claude Van Damme's super #butt! I thought that was real interesting.Blake Harris: I imagine that at 11 years old that was a pretty inspiring experience.Frank Dux: Yeah and then three years later, I saw him again. So those are the three elements. And that's what I found out later in life. 2. level 2. He's a real talent when it comes to that. A lot of it was based on the recollections of my friend Kurt Taylor, who I wrote the script with. Both of them wanted to be the cop.Blake Harris: That's so funny (though it makes sense).Sheldon Lettich: It just couldn't be worked out so the project fell by the wayside until they got Stallone and Wesley Snipes to be in it. And he did that to Sheldon several times. So I thought that it was a good idea to keep my options open. I never accused the military of doing it. A simultaneously misleading and fitting title was certainly bestowed upon Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite, by far the worst installment of the franchise by a longshot. Back when I first started working with Stallone, my agent had told me to bring an idea to pitch him for a script. This was significant not only because he wrote the screenplay for Bloodsport, but also because Dux had said some unflattering things about the writer. Mind you, he's alleging: You're gonna tell me a receipt floated around from 1980 to 1988? Jean-Claude was doing movies for Columbia and they wanted him to bring them some ideas for movies and we brought that idea to them. 4. Jean-Claude's character comes to the US to help out his brother, not with anything like revenge or violence on his mind. Not about Jean-Claude per se, but about releasing Bloodsport in theaters?Sheldon Lettich: Menahem was persuaded by Samuel Hadida, who had released No Retreat, No Surrender in France (where it was called Karate Tiger) and been a fan of Jean-Claude's ever since then. In the early to mid 90s, dinosaurs were soooo cool! And that piece, filled with accusations and allegations, continues even to this day cast doubt upon the reputation of Frank Dux. And that was the difference. So I have all these memories of falling down stairs and crawling on my knees. And he did the helicopter kick in No Retreat, No Surrender and I was well known for my flying kicks and finishing guys off with my spinning flying kicks. Bloodsport. And I could see he was really contemplating it. One contribution I made to that script though was suggesting to Jean-Claude that he set the story in the past. Bloodsport hospitalizing Superman was lifted directly from his first comic book appearance. And it was no-holds-barred, it'd very brutal and bloody, so it was called "Bloodsport." And he said yeah. Plus the guy was just an idol of mine. I told Jean-Claude I might be getting the rights back to Corsican Brothers so he got Moshe on board. "Bloodsport" follows Frank Dux, an American martial artist serving in the military, who decides to leave the army to compete in a martial arts tournament in Hong Kong where fights to the death can occur. He threw a ridge-hand strike and he swept him at the same time. And so how did you swivel from that experience into something in the film world?Sheldon Lettich: This will sound like it's coming completely out of left field, but the first time I actually got paid to write a script was a horror film that involved voodoo.Blake Harris: Yeah, I think that qualifies as "left field" status.Sheldon Lettich: [laughing] What happened was I had met [Blaxploitation star] Leon Isaac Kennedy, who wanted to option a script of mine. He used Mike's own movements against him and dropped him. Okay? Then all of the sudden I got hit in the face with a Black Dragon shirt, and that's how I became the youngest Black Dragon in the history of the Black Dragons.Blake Harris: That's unbelievable. 2. level 1. It would have been an expensive movie. It was a no-budget. At that point, it was to their advantage. I was a gentleman. So Grant's dad, he basically saw that I was struggling to make money so our family could eat and I could buy myself shoes. He taught at the Nakano spy school in Japan. So when I finally connected with Lettich, I worried that there might be some not-so-flattering words headed my way. He was good at stiff karate moves, but that was it. Pushed too farand generally all three words would appear on screenthat was big in the 80s. But I got over it.Blake Harris: Well, given that physically you were not a prime candidate for hand-to-hand combat, how did the idea of martial arts even first cross your radar?Frank Dux: As a kid, as a young kid, I was a James Bond fan. During that time, I gave Jean-Claude some odd jobs. All of this was prior to Bloodsport. I went into the offices of the L.A. Times with my attorney with the actual fight film footage. These targets included the planned mining of a Nicaraguan port and the planned sabotage of certain Nicaraguan installations including power stations and weapons depots, codenamed OPERATION CORDOBA HARBOR. Bloodsport: Directed by Newt Arnold. So I climbed up on the ledge with him. You said "we were working on a sequel." And then Gary Sinese saw the play in New York and he wanted to put it on in Chicago. Let's put Jean-Claude in. And that's how I ended up co-writing Rambo III with him. In the DC Extended Universe, Robert DuBois is played by Idris Elba in the . Dux believes this article was part of a smear campaign orchestrated by business competitors. Live from Largo in L.A. they get into Samuel L. Jackson's infamous death scene, LL Cool J's relationship with his bird, Stellan Skarsgrd's new name, and how Saffron Burrows is the film's true villain. And this felt very personal because the guys that were up on stage for those initial performances were pretty much playing themselves in many respects.Tracers, as the play would later be titled, was first presented as a work-in-progress performance piece on July 4, 1980. His contract was not for writing, it was for use of his name and a portion of his "real-life story." In a recent documentary, Admiral Horton Smith not only acknowledges that I was a covert operative, but also states that any record of mine would have to come out of the Federal Intelligence Court. He was crushed. Bloodsport 4: The Dark Kumite. The red one, the blue one, the black one. They were both pregnant at the same time. A good example of that is Bloodsport. One of the key sequences in the film finds Task Force X sent to free Rick Flag from an enemy camp. This is like 1979 and he wanted to put together some kind of theatrical piece about Vietnam veterans. Took me a long, long time to write that script. He was just polite. The one thing that we did that made the film work so well is that we would do one "twinning shot" per scene. I always try to look for the best in people. Like in South America it was called "Vale Tudo" and if the Japanese were running the event it was "Kumite San Soo," so this was a word that described them all.Blake Harris: That's interesting. And I just want to end it right now." Neither of them was about a martial arts tournament, and neither of them was ever produced. He was pure, he didn't do drugs. I remember paying for the uniforms. And I'll never forgetand I'm terrified of heights, by the way. He didn't like it. He liked the authenticity in it and he'd heard about Tracers also. Over the show's decade-long run, they've covered a lot of. What I said to them [the LA Times] was that the only way you could get a hold of my records was to go to Federal Intelligence Court. How Did This Get Made's ad-free archives are available on Stitcher Premium. He actually challenged me to a fight. When he saw he had to walk [across] an I-beam to me, and I threw a jumping spin heel kick on the ledge of the building there, he goes: Holy shit." "There is not Mr. Tanaka in Japanese history" of the Ninja families, Tanemura said. The whole martial arts thing. Sheldon tells everybody that I told him a story of how I fought these events and he thought that would make a great movie and all this kind of stuff. If he had to be the bad guy and killed by the protagonist. In the end, his psyche was broken when Jimmy Olsen brought his brother onto the scene. The one who's putting up his "dux? But when we found out Frank Dux was going to be there, we realized that this could go very, very bad, very quickly. KUMITE! You've gotta kidnap his friend. That's how Frank and I met.Blake Harris: Do you remember what your first meeting was like?Sheldon Lettich: We hit it off right away. That's just point of the absurdity of the whole thing.Blake Harris: And, when you were there, how did the reporter respond to all this?Frank Dux: I embarrassed the hell out of him. Do you recognize the guy all the way on the right? And we ran around like kids, just like kids, and he was showing me this beautiful art deco penthouse apartment in downtown L.A.Blake Harris: That's a great image. I literally wrote a good majority of that script with Sheldon, but I never got credit for it. And for three months prior to filming, Jean-Claude would come to my studio after I finished classes, he would show up at like 9 o'clock and I would train him in movie fighting.Blake Harris: How skilled was he? And so he says yeah, sure, give it a shot. You see it all the time. And at this point in time I don't think it's going to happen.Blake Harris: Ah, too bad. But it was interesting because he's fighting Mike Stone and Mike Stone had reportedly 91 wins. Hit the Subscribe button to track updates in Player FM, or paste the feed URL into other podcast apps. Are you guys still friendly?Sheldon Lettich: Oh yeah. 8. Frank and I did write a couple of scripts together, and he received credit on both of them. Let's make a kickass, balls-to-the-wall revenge movie. Another thing was that had I co-directed The Quest with Jean-Claude, it might have contributed to a mistaken notion that Jean-Claude co-directed Lionheart and Double Impact with me. As far as, like, the choreography for how fights go and stuff. Do you see what I'm saying? He wanted to teach for me full time, but he ended up driving a limousine.Blake Harris: And then why, after two years, was he allowed to start tinkering?Frank Dux: I don't know, I couldn't tell you on that. And Menahem was dead set against it.Blake Harris: Why?Sheldon Lettich: [Laughing at the memory] His word for Jean-Claude was "poison." Blake Harris: Since martial arts is, and has been, such a large part of your life, I was wondering if it was also a large part of your childhood.Frank Dux: Actually, no. This thing, it had legs, and started traveling around the world (London, Australia, etc. "He's written this Vietnam novel," my agent said, "that the novel's way too long and overwritten. I'm not kidding you. And I gotta give him credit there. Because my idea for Rambo III was: well, there's only one place Rambo could goAfghanistan. On May 1, 1988, just over two months after Bloodsport hit theaters, John Johnson of the L.A. Times published this editorial:NINJA: Hero or Master Fake?Others Kick Holes in Fabled Past of Woodland Hills Martial Arts TeacherAs the title suggests, the piece isn't too kind to Dux. It's risk free with Nord's 30 day money-back guarantee! Blake Harris: What was the scripting process like for Rambo III, working with Stallone?Sheldon Lettich: He and I were pretty much on the same wavelength for that. And I said, "Hey, asshole, I'm right over here." He's also said it under oath by the way and identified me. And he was brought to our attention through Sheldon. We're 60 stories in the air, I'm not kidding you. At one point it was the second most profitable article they'd ever written. Fun bit of trivia: Bloodsport is essentially a hoax perpetrated by Frank Dux, who made outrageous claims about this Kumite tournament that were never substantiated and are physically impossible. Paul, June, and Jason discuss the 1994 science fiction comedy Tammy and the T-Rex. Blake Harris: So we know how Sheldon entered the picture, but how does Jean-Claude Van Damme become involved with Bloodsport?Frank Dux: Oh, Jean-Claude tells this crazy story. And it was a Xeroxed copy of a receipt, a copy that anyone could fabricate on a home copy machine. Either way, it's fair to say that filmgoers are a pretty forgiving lot. He didn't know what to think. They didn't have any proper uniforms. And, like I said, it got me my first agent, a guy named Harold Moskowitz[starts laughing] who, a little while later, was looking for help with another one of his clients. I remember us going back to his apartment and the thing was entirely full.Blake Harris: Did Menahem change his tune about Jean-Claude?Sheldon Lettich: Well, yes and no. They'll cover Frank Dux being a real man, Van Damme's soft baby b. Sadly not at all. But instead, he went back on his word and he did everything in his power to hold me down. Bloodsport is the name of several supervillains appearing in American comic books published by DC Comics. All of these versions exist in DC's main shared universe, known as the DC Universe.. We thought he was f***ing great. It was offered to him and Seagal. In fact, Universal had some problems with what we did there because we did not want it to be a revenge movie. So there would be one shot where you would see both brothers in the same shot, kind of talking to one another and then all the other shots were either close-ups or over-the-shoulders done with a double. DuBois' Bloodsport first appeared in Superman Vol 2 #4 by John Byrne back in 1987. There were a number of people who really liked it. You know what I mean? And on it, they didn't even spell my name correctly. It was very time-consuming and it was not easy to match things up with the optical printer, but I thought we did a pretty good job of that. Nobody clapped for Sheldon. We're not friends [anymore] and he does everything in his power to try and paint me as being a nutball or a kook because of it.Blake Harris: That's why I wanted to focus this piece on you, so you can tell the story in your own words.Frank Dux: So now you're starting to hear the real truth of the matter, you know what I mean? Jean-Claude saw Menahem on the street, did a U-Turn and said, "Hey Menahem, remember me? That was a term, from England, when they used to fight dogs. They were flabbergasted. It was done on the exact same day that Masaaki Hatsumi, Stephen Hayes and Shoto Tanemurathese are guys who think no one in the world is a ninja but them and everyone else is a fake.Blake Harris: What about some of the specific claims that the piece makes? "Blake Harris: So what eventually changed Menahem's mind? And, look, in the mid-80's, something like that sounded real intriguing. Uh, no. And I remember watching a movie where James Bond was doing jujitsu. She said, "Wait a minute, I'll be right back" and then comes in with the same magazine. Actor & comedian Paul Scheer and film critic Amy Nicholson want your advice as they make the ultimate list of the greatest movies . And then Moore took me and Grant and started showing us some stuff. But if they did Bloodsport, then they can do Timecop. Dux's trophy from the Bahamas event was at least partially made in the San Fernando Valley. He's demonstrating how to do a 1-inch punch and a 1-finger push-up. And here comes Moore, and Moore drops him in under 30 seconds. And it's kind of funny because those are superfluous elements to the film. I was there at every meeting and, of course, they were getting all the ideas out of me. Sheldon wrote Legionnaire and was supposed to direct it, but then Jean-Claude got someone else. I thought Bloodsport was going to ruin my career when it was first cut and put together. He was friendly with me. He felt bad for him. "Below are some of the key points and accusations made in the piece: Frank Dux: By the way, the L.A. Times won't even defend the article anymore. And the CIA and everyone is obligated to tell you? Enter the Ninja?Sheldon Lettich: No, there was no script prior to the "Bloodsport" script. And, at that lunch, Mark agreed and hired me to write the script for Bloodsport.Blake Harris: Frank mentioned he already had a script? They were just being assholes.Blake Harris: That seemed to happen a lot at CannonSheldon Lettich: Now Blake, I have never filed a lawsuit against anyone in this business, but I filed a lawsuit against those guys, against Cannon. If it's Stallone: no problem, he can kill me on screen at the end.Blake Harris: The ultimate complimentSheldon Lettich: Ha, yes.Blake Harris: Speaking of Jean-Claude, I imagine that you first met him around this time.
